Hollow Tutorial
Hollow Tutorial

Warm your bead release, get a good connection and place to rings about 1/4" to 3/8" apart. I keep them warm under the flame and sometimes throught this process I go in and out just to keep them happy.

I add about 6 to 7 rings before I close the hollow up. To keep from getting gaps or small holes when I add each ring I heat enough glass on the end of the glass rod to make it alllll the way around the disk. As I add this alll the way around I keep the rod in the flame slightly so that is is always warm my ball of glass and it is easy to control. What you do not want to do is add little bits of glass here and there. Try for no GAPS!

In the photo I am going to bring the 2 disks together. I believe the key to this is heating the mandrel where the glass meets it. I like to move from the base of the disk rather then just heating the top of the disk and moving that. I find that tends to break the release. Once the disks are moved next to each other, heat the center peak and slightly much the two together. Then I heat and round out. Picture below.

Decorating hollows can be tricky. They keep the heat pretty well so I tend to decorate with them on the cool side and just flash heat now and then.

**Transparent glass is the easiest to use at first as it is stiffer. **Any questions don't hesitate to ask! Back to Articles |
